Momo Taro (Peach boy)
Once upon a time, there was a grandfather and a grandmother. They lived a very happy life. Every day, the grandfather went to the forest where he chopped trees and the grandmother washed the laundry at the river.
One day, when she was washing the laundry, she saw peaches on the river. She took one peach at home. When her husband came home after his work, he saw the peach and was very surprised. They cut off the peach and found a little baby inside it. They were very astonished and decided to give the child a name of Momo taro, the baby peach.
The child grew bigger and bigger and reached the age of 15. one day the village was attacked by Oni (Japanese monsters) from the Oni island, so people from the village came to Momo taro for help.
| Villagen: | Momo taro-san! Oni destroyed our village! Go on the Oni island and make peace, please! |

Taro: | All right! I will do my best! |
When Taro went to the Oni island, his grandmother prepared him “Kibi dango”, aweet ride-made cookied.

Taro: | All right, I will go there to make peace, again! |
On his road to the Oni island Taro was called by a monkey.
| Monkey: | Momo taro-san, Momo taro-san! Hold on a little bit! You have some very tasty cookies, I want some! |

Taro: | Yes, I will give you one, butyou must come with me and efeat Oni and help me, please. |

Monkey: | Yes, I will come! |
So, Momo taro and the monkey went to the Oni island. Then, they were chased be a dog.
| Dog: | Momo taro-san, Momo taro-san! Hold on a little bit! You have some very taasty cookies, I want some! |

Taro: | Yes, I will give you some, but you must come with me and defeat Oni, help us, please. |

Dog: | Yes, I will come! |
So, Momo taro, Monkey and Dog went to the Oni island. Then a pheasant calls them.
| Pheasant: | Momo taro-san, Momo taro-san! Hold on a little bit! You have some very tasty cookies, I want some! |

Taro: | Yes, I will give you some. But you must come with me and defeat Oni and help me, please! |
|
Pheasant: | Yes, I will come! |
So, Momo taro, Monkey, Dog and Pheasant went to the Oni islang. At last, they arrived the Oni island. They fought Oni monsters and managed to defeat them. After their defeat, the Oni monsters apologoed in front of Momo taro, Monkey, Dog and Pheasant.
| Oni: | Momo taro-san, please forgive us for everything and take all treasures we have. |
Then, Momo taro, Monkey, Dog and Pheasant returned to the village with the treasures. The village became very rich and peace returned to their live. everybody lived happily ever after.

“Shinyju - Ten - no - Amijima”

Chikamatsu Monzaemon is a famous write who lived between 1653-1724. he wrote for Kabuki and Joruri (Bunraku Theatre)in Osaka theatre. He made dramas more than 100. he was the first who wrote about many double suicides. The most famous plays is “Sonezaki-Shinjyu”(Double suicide of Sonezaki). He expressed in his plays the life of common people.
This story is about real double suicide at Amijima in Osaka in 1721, Chikamatsu was 68 years old. The story is like that; Jihei (28) was a paper chop owner and he had a wife and two children. He falls in love with Koharu (19), who is a geisha girl. The wife’s father brought back home his daughter and two grandchildren with all money and all kimonos. Jihei lost all, his money and family, too. He thought that will be more happier in another world and that’s why he decided to commit double suicides with Koharu.
Koharu was glad to die with Jihei, because she lived him very much and she did not want to marry with a rich man. She hated him, but she was from a poor family, her mother borrowed from a mistress a lot of money. She had to return the money as soon as possible. A rich man promised to give money to the mistress and that’s why she had to marry him.
Kohary and Jihei tried to find a good place to die, that why they were walking all anight in Osaka. They crossed many bridges, and they found the place to die. Koharu and Jihei apologized to Osan、his wife. Jihei killed Koharu by a knife. Jihei hag by himself.
Today, Sayoko performs a last scene.
